Next up in our mini-series of coach interviews covering all our lovely new coaches who joined for Season IV… we sit down with George!

1) What’s your name and where do you come from?

My name is George. I was born in Coventry, then grew up right here in Chippenham, but also spent a lot of time in Bristol and sometimes up north in Middlesbrough with my dad.

2) Tell us a little about how you came to play Blood Bowl and your experience with the game and wider hobby.

So I came to the original learn to play that Dan hosted. It was a fun game, had a good night playing undead. While the team played well, it wasn’t really for me. That and I wasn’t really clicking with any of the available teams (until Bretonnia came out, but that was after I selected my team, lol).

Dan, near the end of season 3, approached me about season 4 and showed me a variety of 3d printed teams, and I really liked my police team (humans for stats). So far I have used them in 3 games, 2 wins and a loss, but overall I am having fun playing them. I have played a lot of Warhammer in the past so getting used to the rules has been fairly easy.

3) What Blood Bowl achievement are you most proud of?

So there are a couple of things that come to mind, but I think my first league match is what takes the cake. I got some very lucky dice rolls in my favour and managed to throw my halfling across the field to score on my very first turn. It was the only goal scored that game, so it won it for me, but honestly, there were so many moments that game it could have gone either way.

4) What’s your favourite team and why?

Everyone I know calls me boring for this but I actually like playing humans in fantasy settings. Something about just an average Joe fighting against these giant trolls or big-eyed monsters is appealing to me.

5) Tell us about the team you’ve brought into Season IV. Did you select it for purely competitive reasons, or were there other factors involved?

I selected my team for season 4 purely because I liked the models. I was given a list of options and a practice game to get used to the rules, and found normal humans to be a good all-around team. I was contemplating imperial Nobles as Bretonnia wasn’t a thing at the tim,e but was persuaded against it as it was a complicated team to play.

6) What was your thought process behind your roster selections, skills taken, and how would you describe your playstyle with this team?

When designing my team, I literally just maxed out every type of player beyond thrower to give me as much of an edge as possible. I was told you only need the one thrower so went with just one. That being said I did make sure to put a halfling in as I love the model, whom I have dubbed Eric Cartman. If you saw the model you would understand.

7) What are your expectations for this season? Do you have any particular goals you’d like to achieve? Who are you backing to win each division this season?

I honestly have no expectations this season beyond having a good time and getting to know the Forge Breakers. I honestly expected to go in and lose every match, but atthe time of writing, I am somehow 4th in the division after week 1. My only Goal now is to beat Mellie, lol. As to who I want to win each division, I don’t know the players enough to make a decision, but I will say I hope Dan gets some victories for getting me into the game.

8) What’s one thing you’d change about Blood Bowl?

I have yet to play enough games to think of anything to change, so I will skip this question.

9) What Pitch is your favourite (rules, artwork, whatever)?

So far I have only played on standard pitches but then have been nice to play on. The artwork, like where the trapdoor is, does make it easier to find the sweet spot for the initial throw in.

10) Outside of Blood Bowl tell us a little about your life and main passions?

So I have been a wargammer properly since I was 11-12, but have been collecting since I was in primary school. My dad and I painted up a Gondor army as I was really into The Lord of the Rings at the time. Since then I have branched out a lot with other systems of which include: Warhammer 40k, Warhammer Old World, Bolt Action, Dropzone, Dropfleet, Dystopian Wars, and more recently getting into Konflikt 47.

Probably my biggest wargamming passion at the moment is The Old World. I have posted a few painting and gaming pictures in the Forge Breakers Discord about my progress with my main Bretonnian army.

I am also a larper. I have been going now for 3 years on and off, somehow staying alive as the same character. It is a lot of fun, and if you have the money, I would recommend it. I have so many fond memories already with my group and looking forward to going again in April. Not to mention it is essentially a weekend of drinking and camping. There is so much to do and so much renown to earn. During my last event I managed to earn a hero name. This is part of my nations culture where if you do something to distinguish yourself you earn a name. For my efforts in battle I was named ‘Pike’s Bane’ due to me running down many pike men with my sword and shield.

11) Pirates or Ninjas?

Got to go with Pirates. You get guns and cutlasses and the freedom of the sea. Growing up I have fond memories of sailing with my granddad so I have always enjoyed my time on the water, even if I get sea sick, lol.

Thanks for sharing, George😊
