This week we sit down with a new coach, Nick, who joined Forge Breakers for Season III.

1) What’s your name and where do you come from?

Hi, I’m Nick (Selfy_74), born and bred in Calne, but courtesy of His Majesty’s Royal Navy, my mother is Maltese.

2) Tell us a little about how you came to play Blood Bowl and your experience in with the game and wider hobby.

The first time I ever played Blood Bowl was second edition, around 1989. Over the years, I drifted in and out of the scene and there’s been some pretty big gaps until online play came along. Since about 2012, I’ve played a lot online and occasionally on table-top. This includes a smattering of tournaments, but league play is where it’s at, for me.

3) What Blood Bowl achievement are you most proud of?

I’ve not really achieved much, if I’m honest. So, thinking about it, I reckon it’s that I developed an Underworld Goblin with Block, Horns, Big Hand, Two Heads and Extra Arms. He was an absolute beast and was universally despised throughout the league. An absolute joy to coach, he led a charmed life and won me so many games all on his own.

4) What’s your favourite team and why?

Hmm, I don’t really have a favourite team. My likes are, any stunty team, any team with mutations, any team that are dead, any team that can run around a bit, and any team that can punch stuff. That doesn’t really narrow it down much, does it?

5) Tell us about the team you’ve brought into Season III. Did you select it for purely competitive reasons, or were there other factors involved?

My Lizardmen team, Spirit of Tepok, was chosen for the main reason that they were easy to paint. Painting has always been my arch nemesis and I roundly despise it. However, I also don’t like playing with an unpainted team, so ease of painting was a prime consideration. For secondary reasons, see question 4. They can run about a bit and also smash face.

6) What was your thought process behind your roster selections, skills taken and how would you describe your playstyle with this team?

There wasn’t really a thought process. You take Block, because you must. Then I took Tackle because of the shed load of Dark Elves. That’s really the extent of it. My playstyle is, smash with the big lizards, scoot with the small lizards. Although, I never shy away from sparking stuff out with a skink, if the opportunity presents itself.

7) What are your expectations for this season?

Do you have any particular goals you’d like to achieve? Who are you backing to win each division this season? My only goal is to have fun in every game and to see what happens. In division 1 and 2, I have no idea who will win. However, in division 3 I think it might be Harvey DaBull. He’s a very good player. I nearly squeaked a draw against him but my skink snaked a GFI to score in turn 16 and I lost.

8) What’s one thing you’d change about blood bowl?

I’d allow all the Dungeon Bowl mixed race rosters as playable in a standard league. That would be amazing.

9) What Pitch is your favourite (rules, artwork, whatever)?

My favourite pitch is any that is extremely plain and I can see the damn squares!

10) Outside of Blood Bowl tell us a little about your life and main passions?

During the day (mostly), I am part of an ecology team that manages nature reserves. My expertise is in grassland management and butterflies. That takes up an awful lot of my time, but in the evenings and at weekends, I enjoy my other role as taxi driver for my kids.

11) Pirates or Ninjas?

Pirates because plunder, booty, swag and treasure.

12) What’s your favourite film?

When I was 6, my dad took me to see The Empire Strikes Back. As I grew older and began to understand what the hell had happened, it became my favourite film. That was until 2016, when Rogue One blew me away.

Cheers Nick!
